After a slight delay, the coveted 2007 WBF Turkey Modern Leagues has ended triumphantly. Five seasons saw a total of 372 players compete - 82 of which competed for the WBF Turkey 2007 Championship beginning January.
The final event saw eight hours of exciting play and concluded with George Simpson's victory. Simpson is not only the new WBF Turkey Champion, but he is also the proud recipient of full sponsorship (all registration plus travel and accommodation expenses) by WBF Turkey to represent Turkey at the 2008 Europe Modern Backgammon Championship. This Championship is set to kick off from mid May in Austria. The final event took 5 times of 11 pointed series and the final two players (from Istanbul and Bodrum) played a great game. Engin Gurses of Istanbul currently has the highest number of winnings at WBF Turkey activities. However, this time it was experienced player George Simpson of Bodrum (who finished third last year) that took home the title with 3-1. The scores of the final game were 11/7, 11/10, 2/11 and 12/6. Third place winner was Cem Duran from Istanbul followed by Semih Sugle from Kdz. Eregli in fourth. This is the first time a foreign player has taken home the title – congratulations to George Simpson and we look forward to watching him at the 2008 European Championship. Related articles
